Sgt. Darilyn C. Duong, a DI with the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, was found in her apartment in Port Royal, just north of the installation. She was 25 years old.

The cause of death is currently under investigation, Marine spokesperson 2nd Lt. Joshua Hartley said in a statement.

“The Marine Corps extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and fellow Marines affected by this loss,” Hartley said. “At this time, it would be premature to speculate on the circumstances or results of the investigation. … Out of respect for the Marine’s family and loved ones, no additional details will be released at this time.”

A native of Winnebago, Nebraska, Duong is the second drill instructor assigned to Parris Island to be found dead in as many months.

On May 30, Sgt. Albert Haynes II, 24, was found dead in a hotel room in Starke, Florida, where he was staying while attending a poolee function with U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station-Jacksonville.

Duong, who was single with no dependents, enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Food Service Specialist before becoming a drill instructor.

Her awards include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, two Good Conduct Medals and the National Defense Service Medal.

The Defense Department on Tuesday identified Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York, as the third soldier killed during an enemy attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, Jordan.

In the wake of the assault, U.S. Central Command confirmed the deaths of U.S. Army Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, and 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, who died July 17 and July 18, respectively, according to a DoD release.

CENTCOM originally noted that a third U.S. service member was missing, however, the command announced on July 19 that, “After a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today. An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing.”

The missing third service member appears to be Rampersad.

The Pentagon noted that the incident is under investigation, with the soldier status updated from “missing” to “believed to be deceased.”

According to the release, Rampersad enlisted in the Army in 2019 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command, Ansbach, Germany.

“Today, we mourn the loss of Sgt. Angel Rampersad,” Brig. Gen. Glenn Henke, commanding general of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, said in a statement. “We extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to her family and all those who are navigating this unimaginable loss. The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command is grieving, and we will continue to support one another as we process this tragedy.”

Rampersad’s awards include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

The latest casualties bring the toll of American troops killed in the war with Iran to 18. More than 400 U.S. troops have been wounded in the campaign, which began Feb. 28.

Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed in action during the detonation of unexploded ordnance at Erbil Air Base, Iraq, a release states.

Lt. Gen. John L. Rafferty, commanding general of Army Air and Missile Defense Command, said in a statement that Swinton died “during an operation to safeguard fellow soldiers.”

The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation. A second service member was wounded in the detonation and received treatment for a minor injury, U.S. Central Command said.

Swinton enlisted in the Army in 2017 as an Air Defense Early Warning System Operator. He was stationed in Fayetteville and assigned to D Battery, 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command.

Following his death, Swinton will receive the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge, the Pentagon said. He will be posthumously promoted to staff sergeant.

“His service will not be forgotten, and his sacrifice is not in vain. We will support Sgt. Swinton’s family and his unit during this difficult period,” Rafferty said. “His loss will inspire his fellow soldiers to continue the mission.”

Swinton’s prior awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge.

Brig. Gen. John L. Dawber, commanding general of the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, said Swinton “took great pride in his work and the people around him.”

“He answered the call to duty with courage, honor, and selfless dedication,” Dawber said.

Separately, the Pentagon released the identities Monday of two other U.S. soldiers killed in action in recent days in an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, Jordan.

U.S. Army Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, and 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, died July 17 and July 18, respectively, according to a Department of Defense release.

The deaths bring the toll of American troops killed in the war with Iran to 17.

The Space Force identified the airman Friday as 1st Class Cedric Eneluna, 23, a member of the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Pavements and Equipment Flight.

No other personnel were injured in the incident, according to a Space Force release. A Safety Board Investigation was launched, and details will not be released until the completion of the investigation.

The Santa Barbara Coroner’s office had not determined the official cause of death as of Friday.

Eneluna joined the military in 2024, and he arrived to his first duty assignment at Vandenberg in August of that year, the release reads.

“Eneluna served with professionalism, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his teammates and the mission,” the release says. “During his assignment at Vandenberg, he earned the respect and admiration of those around him through his positive attitude, tireless work ethic, and willingness to help others.”

Eneluna spent his childhood in the Philippines and referred to Fayetteville, North Carolina, as his hometown.

The 30th Pavements and Equipment Flight unit are known as the “Dirt Boyz” and are tasked with maintaining the base’s roads, airfield and infrastructure in support of the base’s launch, test and range operations.

The “Dirt Boyz” remember Eneluna as a positive influence who made everyone feel welcome, the release says, and he never hesitated to lend a helping hand.

“He brought out the best in everyone,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Seth Poulsen, 30th CES commander. “He was always ready to work, always willing to help, and always had a positive attitude. He truly represented what it means to be an Airman.”

The base will share details surrounding any upcoming memorial services or recognition on the Central Coast at a later date.

Ladarrion McCray, 23, and Emma Bradshaw, 22, face eight charges, including felony murder by child abuse, making false statements and aggravated animal cruelty, according to a July 15 announcement.

Prosecutors allege the couple “willfully deprived their son of necessary sustenance” for roughly two weeks in January. The child, identified in court documents as “L.M.,” died on Jan. 28 as a result of the alleged neglect.

According to investigators, McCray had recently been transferred to Fort Benning, and Bradshaw joined him a short time later while pregnant with the child.

Court records do not specify the child’s age or when the family moved into on-base housing.

Army investigators executed a search warrant at the home the day the child died and found two dogs — a male hound and a female Doberman — that “appeared severely malnourished.”

Both animals were taken to a shelter, where veterinarians determined they suffered from “severe malnourishment and significant muscle wasting.”

During interviews with investigators, McCray and Bradshaw said their son had shown no signs of illness before his death. They also said they had buried a third dog, a dachshund that died from an illness, at a park off base.

Investigators instead found the dachshund discarded in a trash can behind the home. A necropsy determined the dog died of starvation.

Court records show both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges on June 11. They were released on bond and placed under pretrial supervision.

McCray, who is currently the subject of discharge proceedings by the Army, was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. Once separated from the service, he is to report to his parents’ home in Georgia. Bradshaw was authorized to reside at a women’s shelter in Alabama.

Neither defendant is permitted to possess pets while awaiting trial, although McCray’s release conditions were modified because his parents own dogs.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for July 22 in federal court in Columbus, Georgia. If convicted, they could be sentenced to life in prison.

Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards vanished after the MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter he was aboard went down at 3:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, along with three other sailors who were subsequently rescued.

“Commander Gabe Edwards was the epitome of selfless leadership, who dedicated himself to service and sacrifice for the last 20 years,” Capt. Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, said in a Tuesday statement. “Our deepest gratitude and sympathy go out to his family.”

The Navy immediately commenced a search-and-rescue operation following the emergency helicopter landing, but after 102 hours searching over 14,000 square miles of water, the service suspended its efforts.

Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 is currently embarked on the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush in support of military operations in the Middle East.

The circumstances surrounding the emergency landing are currently under investigation, though the Navy maintains that the incident does not appear to be the result of a hostile event.

Edwards received his “Wings of Gold” aviator badge in 2008 as a helicopter pilot and served with HSC-22, HSC-84, HSC-85 and Naval Special Warfare Group 4 as the air-to-ground fires office and Joint Terminal Attack Controller.

He took over as commanding officer of HSC-5 in July 2025 and was selected for promotion to captain by the fiscal 2027 O-6 Line Officer Promotion Board.

Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao noted in a post on Tuesday that Edwards’ promotion would be carried out posthumously.

“For 20 years, Commander Edwards served our nation with courage and integrity,” Cao wrote. “In recognition of his extraordinary service and sacrifice, I have directed that Commander Edwards be posthumously promoted to his selected rank of captain.”

During his career, Edwards accumulated more than 2,000 flight hours and was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), among other awards.

Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca, two children and large extended family, a Navy release states.

“We are profoundly grateful to every sailor, aviator, and Airman who devoted countless hours, extraordinary skill, and unwavering determination in the effort to bring Gabe home,” Rebecca Edwards said in a statement. “Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment. He led with humility, integrity, and compassion, always putting his people before himself.”

Cpl. Johnny Tamayo and Cpl. Emily Martinez, both assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, respectively, for their actions following the June 6 shooting at Unhinged Nightclub, where one person was killed.

The Marines had recently returned from a 10-month deployment and were out with friends when gunfire erupted inside the nightclub.

Tamayo was upstairs when the shooting began.

“As soon as the gunshots rang out, I already knew what they were,” Tamayo said in a release. “I looked down and saw the victim at the bottom of the staircase. Everybody else had already run out, so I instinctively ran down there.”

Tamayo tended to the victim, searched for additional casualties and potential threats and directed someone to call 911. He used towels to try and control severe bleeding from a gunshot wound to the victim’s neck.

Martinez, who was outside when the shots were fired, realized Tamayo had not exited the building with the rest of the crowd. Afraid he might be injured, she went back into the nightclub and joined him in providing emergency aid until the police arrived.

The victim later died from his injuries.

“They executed exactly how a United States Marine should, and I’m immensely proud of them,” Master Sgt. James Boles, 3/6 communications chief, said in the release.

Both Marines credited their response to their training.

“Trust your training,” Tamayo said. “I didn’t actively think about helping him. It just kicked in.”

A U.S. Navy aircrewman is missing after a helicopter carrying four crew members made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea on Wednesday, the Navy said.

The MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter, assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush, had an emergency water landing at 3:30 a.m. EDT. While the cause of the emergency landing wasn’t immediately clear, the Navy said it did not appear to be the result of any hostile activity.

“Three of the helicopter’s four crew members have been recovered and are in stable condition aboard George H. W. Bush,” the Navy said. “U.S. Navy assets in the region are currently searching for other aircrewman still missing.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Welch was the Coast Guard’s ninth top enlisted chief, serving as MCPOCG from October 2002 to June 2006, a period when the Coast Guard joined the Department of Homeland Security, established specialized units to engage in high threat operations, deployed to support Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, responded to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and reorganized into sectors.

He served as senior enlisted adviser to then Commandant Adm. Thomas Collins, providing insight on major issues facing the enlisted force, including personnel concerns and challenges with the service’s aging equipment and work and living conditions.

Welch enlisted in the Coast Guard in November 1979, serving as quartermaster aboard four cutters and as officer in charge of two, the coastal patrol boats Sockeye and Point Chico. He later served as command master chief for the Ninth District — now the Great Lakes District — and school chief of the Chief Petty Officer Academy in Petaluma, California.

In a Coast Guard-wide message Friday to service members, Commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday and MCPOCG Phillip Waldron described Welch as a “visionary leader and driving force” behind initiatives that shaped the modern Coast Guard workforce, including the creation of the Senior Enlisted Command Master Chief Course and the consolidation of the Chief Petty Officer Academy at Coast Guard Training Center Petaluma.

During his career, Welch earned the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal, three Meritorious Service Meals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, a Navy Commendation Medal and other personal awards. He was named Coast Guardsman of the Year in 1991 for his work while serving as an underway navigation and visual communications instructor and training liaison officer at Fleet Training Unit U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

Welch spent the past decade working as director of corporate business development for PD Systems, a government contractor that provides logistics, engineering and administrative services.

Welch was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was active in sports, scouting and outdoor activities. During high school, he was voted “Most Courteous Boy” — a characteristic his obituary said remained a hallmark “throughout his earthly life.”

He is survived by his wife, Mari Lynn Welch, son, John Allyn Welch, father, John Welch, and two goddaughters, according to his obituary.

In posts on social media, former colleagues and family members remembered a man who served as a mentor and leader to the force.

“I’m deeply saddened,” wrote Vince Patton, who served as the eighth Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, in a Facebook post announcing Welch’s death. “Frank relieved me as MCPOCG in October, 2002. He was indeed a true friend and was admired by many.”

Visitation will be held at the Cunningham Turch Funeral Home in Alexandria, Virginia, at 4 p.m. on July 6, followed by a brief memorial service at 6 p.m.

Welch will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.

Engineman Fireman Apprentice Isaac Benjamin Norris, 22, was assigned to the USS Harry S. Truman and was last seen on Naval Station Norfolk on June 14.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service did not announce a cause of death.

“NCIS remains committed to working closely with Navy leadership and our law enforcement partners to ensure the safety and security of our Navy and Marine Corps communities while conducting thorough investigations and supporting affected personnel and families,” the Naval Criminal Investigative Service said.

The Virginia State Police issued a critical missing adult alert on social media June 16, prompting a search that ultimately ended with the location of his body last week.

Though the NCIS is investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance, Norris’ death will likely not be ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, said a U.S. Navy official with knowledge of the case.

Alexander Schlageter, another sailor from Naval Station Norfolk, was reported missing last month and has yet to be located, according to multiple news reports. Schlageter is assigned to the USS Ted Stevens.

NCIS declined to provide further information into Schlageter’s case as the investigation into his whereabouts is ongoing.
